By the time of his appointment with Dr Chandira, Clyde was outwardly much improved. He was no longer drinking during the day or watching the Christmas movie channels (perhaps it was only the former that made the latter bearable), and was getting up for his daily trip to the nature reserve, even in the rain. Craig had felt safe going back to work.

Inwardly, however, he was feverish and disturbed. He looked better because he had divorced himself from reality by creating an obsessive fantasy world, one where he had conversations with an imaginary Laura, travelled with her, shared interests with her, cooked and tasted delicious food with her and shared a home with her – in addition to the obvious physical pleasures. The only respite he had from this strength-numbing frenzy was reading classic detective stories, of which he got through almost one a day – merely a change of comforting fantasy, and his time in the hide by the pool. There was no need to do anything there but sit, like the surreptitious fox, and be aware of what was around him; there was nothing else he could do amongst creatures who could only be themselves and do the things they did.

It was in this state of disturbed, brittle contentment that he set off for Harley Street for his first therapy session. He had met enough wealthy people to know some who used Harley Street practitioners, and yet he somehow didn’t really believe they still existed, his limited experience of the medical profession being associated with stuffy and crowded buildings of the concrete, metal and plastic type. Lucinda had had a private doctor, but he’d never bothered himself.

He supposed if they’d had children, he would have combined all their medical care to one practice, but it was not something they’d ever discussed. He realised with a jolt that he’d got through a good portion of his adult life and marriage without giving children much thought at all. It wasn’t that he didn’t like children or definitely didn’t want any, just that having children was something that happened to other people; something that if it were to come into his own life would be so far in the future as to be currently over the horizon. In so many ways a boyish innocent, he simply didn’t feel old enough for such a momentous responsibility.

These thoughts were in his mind as he was ushered into the consulting room of Dr Chandira. “Good morning, Clyde,” she smiled broadly and reassuringly. “Lovely to meet you. Please take a seat.”

“Hello,” said Clyde, feeling shy.

“Your friend, Mr Minter, outlined the situation to me – with your consent, I understand.”

“That’s right.”

“Good. I believe that it’s a question of supernatural experiences and psychic phenomena in your house relating to violent events that once happened there.”

“That’s right.” Now he was definitely nervous.

She consulted her notes. “Mr Minter tells me that you are also consulting an expert in such happenings, a Dr, er,” she checked, “Lill.”

“I didn’t know he was a doctor,” said Clyde stupidly.
